Purpose of Tenure-Track System

A tenure-track system is one career development opportunity where young researchers can build upon their strong backgrounds early on and grow as principal investigators under an appointment period employment contract. Selections are made with fair and transparent evaluations and then they are promoted to more stable employment, only after they successfully meet the criteria.

Since 2009, in order to establish and develop a system for the human resource department, university wide, we have applied a tenure-track system. With the advent of the “Program for Promotion of Environmental Improvement for Independence of Young Researchers”(Formerly supported by the Coordination Fund for Promoting Science and Technology supplied by Japanese Science and Technology Agency), University of Yamanashi has introduced and practiced two concepts for the tenure-track system (supervised by the university president ):“Promotion Program for improving the research environment for young researchers, working independently” and “Restructuring personnel management system of whole university”.

Our Tenure-Track System

Our tenure-track system is conducting two steps: “Developing a Mature Research Hub” fosters young researchers with strong will and potential to develop extensively the established research fields of cutting-edge and “Creating a Next-Generation Research Hub” fosters young researchers with strong will and potential to promote novel research fields of cutting-edge. University of Yamanashi has created these two pronged approaches to spiral up and grow the development cycle of human resource and research hub.

Researches who are employed under the tenure-track system will receive sufficient research fund, laboratory space, and environment where they can preside over their research independently. Additionally, they will benefit from the generous support of knowledgeable mentors.
